There are many myths about how serious a fall can be and its impact on the body. September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, and this allows Dr. Brett Stark of Auburn Foot Care to clear the air and share the facts. The results of a fall can be a serious injury or even death. These accidents more commonly impact older Americans.
Facts about falls
- 1 in 4 older adults fall each year in the United States
- More than half of falls take place at home
- People with osteoarthritis have a higher risk of fractures
As we close out this month, let’s talk about prevention. You can start at home.
Check your refrigerator
Did you know that you can start strengthening your bones today? With a trip to the grocery store, increase your intake of foods with calcium and vitamin D. In addition to receiving healthy amounts of vitamin D from the sun, you can also find it in foods like tuna. For calcium, think of dairy foods like milk and yogurt. Try leafy greens for non-dairy options.
Check your lighting
Take a look around your home to see which areas could use some improvements. From bathrooms to the kitchen, brighten things up and make it easier for your loved ones to move around — day or night. Adding nightlights or small lamps can help to reduce the risk of a fall. Remove additional tripping hazards like slippery rugs or clutter.
Check your medication
Ask questions about medication and read the labels about common side effects. Drowsiness and dizziness are symptoms to watch. If a loved one is taking medication with these possible side effects, check in on them regularly.
